Holiday Message from Edris

by edris on in Clips

FRIENDSHIPS = HAPPINESS Hello, As 2015 draws to an end, I reflect on all that has passed so that I can begin to move forward and refresh the air and energy that surrounds me. I take stock of everything that has occurred within the year and remind myself that humility, trust, friendships, humanity, dedication, professionalism, mentoring and respect are the virtues and lessons that I hold at the apex of my life. This year, I along with my staff at EDRIS Salon, had our trust and loyalty in humanity rocked several times. But our humility and professionalism was steadfast. With a sense of collective lightness, our respect for each other only strengthened the bonds we have built over the years. After enduring the trials we were given, our aura has been cleansed. To us, 2016 seems filled with more clarity, brightness, reenergized creativity, and a collective collaborative spirit as a team. My message to you is this, letting go is the hardest part of our darkest spaces but allowing yourself to feel light enables us all to glow and achieve. A heart felt thank you to all of our clients and friends who step into the salon, or to those cheering us on the sidelines. Your continuous support is invaluable. Without your hair and your trust we are nothing! My wish for you all is happiness and safety whilst creating deep rooted friendships with tons of love! Peace and love xo. Edris

Product Tips for the Dog Days of Summer

by edris on in Clips

To help you through the last and hottest weeks of summer we asked our staff for their product must-haves and tips on how to use them. EDRIS: August the hottest and most humid month in NYC but don’t fear we have the product that fights humidity and prevents frizz-prone hair. Oribe’s IMPERMEABLE is a must-have product and it absolutely WORKS!!! No matter your hair texture; straight, wavy, curly or kinky, Impermeable will keep frizz at bay! A great way to use impermeable spray (and to ensure a fortress around your just blown out hair) is to spray each section lightly before using your flat iron. This will lock in the product for an extra layer of protection and battle frizz even in the most humid dog days of summer. There’s nothing like having certainty and confidence in your tresses. It’s a great alternative to hairspray and I use it through out the summer as my go-to finishing product. ALEXIS: I, for one am not a person who likes the feeling of product build-up on my hair. The less product, the better. When using products on others, I also like to go by the same motto. One of my favorite products to use is the Shu Uemura, Satin Design. Satin Design quenches the hair thirst, provides sun protection, provides heat protection, and doesn’t leave a film. This product can also be used on damp or dry hair. When used on damp hair, I like to cocktail it with Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Oil if the hair needs extra moisture. When using the two products, I like to use a ratio of 2:1. I commonly pump more of the Satin Design than the Essence Absolue oil when combining the two. The foundation of the Satin Design gives the hair a nice soft touch…

Women’s History Month

by edris on in Clips

The National Women’s History Project brought forward the most amazing theme for Women’s History Month 2014, “Women of Character, Commitment, and Courage”.  As a WOMAN from the Caribbean, a Mother, and a business WOMAN, I understand and am inspired by the many roles we WOMEN play in the everyday walks of life. In an effort to recognize the amazing WOMEN who patronize EDRIS Salon, I am choosing to look more closely at the many positive influences that played a large part in their walk to becoming women of character, commitment, courage, AND more. xo Edris.   Dawn Brown – has an established career in fashion PR and is the former PR for the Iconic NYC department staple Barney’s. Lois Joy Johnson – has a distinguished editorial career working for leading fashion magazines and a notable author.  Camille Young – is a senior level business executive at a major pharmaceutical company. Candace Taylor Horvath – has achieved a successful career balance between energy trading and health & wellness consulting. Monique Pean – is a visionary jewelry designer and a young entrepreneur to watch.   There are a multitude of women (both past and present) that have inspired us to strive for excellence.  We want to celebrate one of your female inspirations and how they inspired you. Louis J J In high school I clearly didn’t fit the preppy format so I turned to three strong independent woman- Georgia O’ Keefe, Coco Chanel and Diana Vreeland- as role models. I loved their work, personal style and challenging lifestyles. Dawn B Dorothy Dandride, Lena Horne, Ava Gardner, Bethanne Hardison, Faye Overton, Diahann Carroll, Babara Brown all have inspired me for different reasons. Camille Y My mom, Joycie Lewis inspires me daily through her strength, her resolve, her elegance, and her faith. Candace Y My female inspiration and informal mentor is…

Couture Spring 2014

by edris on in Clips

by Ronnie Bruns   Couture Spring 2014 is here and that means directional, experimentation, time to dazzle in order to sell perfume and handbags and finally a steamer trunk full of ideas… nous allons bavardent! Chanel The show looked as if from a Busby Berkley production number with live “orchestra” but this is Karl so it was pure modernity with a foundation based on the corset with separates layered on top. The pale color story kept the controlled waist the unifying narrative. The hair was artfully WINDswept yet controlled away from the glittered lined eyes with thin headbands. Grounding all of this were the TRAINERS that all the models wore (my investigation found they were comprised of python, lace, pearls and tweed and will retail in the US for $4,061.00!) Wait list at Bergdorfs in 3, 2…   Valentino Opera played the defining moment at Valentino. VERDI! This played out a little too literal for me with few high notes and many that needed auto tune! Lets use opera glasses and peer plus pres!     Atelier Versace Donatella paid homage to Grace Jones from her Miyake draped and molded period. As an 80’s child and I know there are many of you out there, don’t we all still love a lil Grace in our face!     Christian Dior Raf Simons is more ebullient every season that passes since his appointment at Dior. This couture season he’s all lightness and openness both in fabrication and psychology with weightless fabrics flawlessly cut for volume but the fabrics have small delicate cutouts which thinly veiled the female form within … Or gave light and air to the female form within! Tres jolie!     Schiaparelli  Schiaparelli…  children say it with me scap-a-reli. C’est amusant! Marco Zanini has brought Elsa back with…

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

by edris on in Clips

Our scalp and hair is very sensitive to the environment. The methods we use to stay warm and dry ourselves can create havoc this time of year. Often heaters, hats and hot showers are the culprits and we should not deny our body, scalp and hair the moisture it craves. Fight the Dry – use caution with heat! Equally applicable with heat in our homes or from the direct heat we apply to our hair (blowdryers & flatirons). Keep your showers mild and avoid very hot water on the scalp. Keep your dryers and irons off their hottest setting when possible. Humidity Use a humidifier, especially at night. The humidifier helps combat static electricity. Reduce the Frequency Everyday shampooing in the winter will strip moisture from the hair. Try to stretch your shampoos. For our gym ladies, wipe the scalp after working out with “Thayer’s Witch Hazel”. The product comes in various botanicals; Rose water(an amazing fragrance for the hair), Cucumber (for its cooling effects), and Aloe Vera (for its soothing properties). Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! To increase moisture on dry hair, add a light moisturizing conditioner before shampooing. We love Aestalance’s Deep-sea Mud. It is incredibly moisturizing, and it is very soothing on a dry scalp. The need to clean – the REAL dry shampoo. For flaky and oily scalps or product build-up, try dry shampooing. Add your normal shampoo (it should be gentle) directly to scalp, and apply section by section BEFORE wetting the hair. This will help lift buildup and debris from the scalp. Fight the static Diffuse static electricity from over blow drying hair with a fabric softener sheet (yes, really!). You may also apply a thin layer of anti static product to the hair (SHU UEMERA Satin Design or Oil Absolu). Many of these products are…
