The Afro’s comeback; Once a trend, natural hair is now part of culture

by edris on in Clips

It’s big, bold and back in style. The Afro — that high hairstyle that conjures images of psychedelic swirls and flower-printed bell-bottoms — is making its case for the current decade. Stars like Solange Knowles, Questlove and comedian Reggie Watts all rock famous ’fros. And a new book is entirely dedicated to the ’do. The timing makes sense. Natural hair is a perfect fit for a generation that shuns Styrofoam and loves composting, hybrid cars and eco-friendly yoga clothes. “The more they do it, the more people will follow,” says celebrity hairstylist Edris Nicholls, owner of Edris Salon, which recently moved to its new location at 35 W. 20th St. “I love [Solange’s] hair,” she says of Beyoncé’s fashion-savvy little sis. “For me, she’s much more attractive with her hair in an Afro than with extensions or braids.” At Edris Salon, fewer customers are opting for chemical-laden straightening treatments and hair-breaking extensions. “Women are becoming more comfortable with their hair textures,” Nicholls says. “The styles today are freer. They’re cutting it off and trying to fall in love with their hair again.” And, it’s easier! “Natural short hair or Afros can be maintained with an easy wash and wear,” Nicholls says. “Black women and men are getting tired of relaxers and weaves that over time leave devastating effects on scalps and retardation of hair growth. Plus, the cost of getting these services done is extremely expensive.” Read the full article here: The Afro’s Back

event: you can touch my hair

by edris on in Clips

EVENT DETAILS For years black hair has been more than just hair in American culture. It’s been a suppressed racial characteristic, a symbol of political protest and political change and most recently the cause of some very awkward and offensive situations. We, at Un’ruly, have delved deep into the question and have shared our thoughts on the Huffington Post. But to take things even further, we’re exploring the tactile fascination with black hair by holding an interactive public art exhibit in NYC. What: an interactive public art exhibit, dubbed You Can Touch My Hair, where strangers from all walks of life will have the welcomed opportunity to touch various textures of black hair. Where: Union Square, New York City When: June 6th 2-4pm and June 8th 2-4pm

PUNKED !

by edris on in Clips

The Met Gala is considered the Oscars of the fashion world! The grand stage for hollywood celebrities, models and a light dusting of music personality (mainly Anna Wintour’s favorite) mingle with the fashion world. Last night was different than most – They were not doing a review on a fashion designer where everyone chose / borrowed an outfit, it was a focus on a culture and a era. FROM PUNK TO CHOAS – the idea was to reflect on ‘punks’ influence on fashion today. When the ideas of PUNK comes to mind usually images of Malcolm McClaren, Vivienne Westwood, Soo Catwoman, and Zandra Rhodes are foremost. Faded memories of sweaty studded nights and the sting of melting black eyeliner, we here at Edris Salon waited with anticipation for some dangerously attired arrivals on the Met carpet. Instead, what we got were too many celebrities that are far too terrified of ending up on the worst dressed list. Many in attendance clearly missed the mark with the nights theme! In lieu of giving us anarchy and thought provoking, we were instead greeted with lukewarm and meek. However, not all was lost. There were a few amazing standouts that got it, and got it great. So in the spirit of Soiuxie Siox….let’s keep things darkly positive. Madonna: For completely committing to the nights theme, and showing the young girls “Mama can crush the red carpet!”. Vivienne Westwood: For being the Queen of punk. Although shame on Vogue.com William Norwich for rudely cutting her off mid-sentence in her interview. Sarah Jessica Parker: For bringing typical fabulous SJPness. Zandra Rhodes: For being the High Priestess Miley Cyrus: For stepping out of her box, and becoming someone to watch Honorable Mention – January Jones: For hair and make-up To all the others, there’s always next…

Perfect Full Eyebrows!

by edris on in Clips

Eyebrows are becoming increasingly more important in the beauty world. Vogue has published several stories on the importance of a full brow. Not only do they frame and add character to the face but they also help define the look of a person who takes pride in their appearance. Celebrities like Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman, Beyonce and Gisele Bundchen are embracing this look. Today we love a thicker bolder brow, but it can sometimes be hard to achieve. It’s important not to pull too many hairs, and to use the right tools. At EDRIS Salon, Quinntin reccommends a good brow primer by Claudio Riaz cosmetics, pencils by Anastasia or brow powder by Laura Mercier. Grooming without over tweezing is the only way to achieve the perfect set of brows

Hair TIp!

by edris on in Clips

The last weeks have been so cold on NY and the winter weather dries more than just the skin. The winter months can wreak havoc on your hair, leaving it dry and causing it to lose its luster. This is why many clients come to the EDRIS salon to get their moisture treatments and glazes. Glazes can add or eliminate tones and add shine. Just because winter is dull and drab does not mean your hair cannot have radiance.

Dont’ wash it away-Go Gray!

by edris on in Clips

It’s official—blondes may have more fun but going gray is getting all the attention. On designer runways, in celebrity circles and with the eternally chic–like Daphne Guinness–going gray is anything but granny! From Warhol White to Brillo steel, a new breed of silver streaked Rapunzels are letting their hair down. Young women like Pixie Geldof, Tilda Swinton and Kate Moss have bleached their hair a silver platinum tone. It’s a head turning hue for hair and a signature look for icons like Kate Lanphear, fashion editor at Elle—NO—Correction–style director of T Magazine: NY Times Style Magazine who said back in 2010– it’s meant to read “more subversive than glamorous.” Well, fast forward to 2013. “At Edris, going to gray can be absolutely great and is meant to be more glamorous than subversive.” says colorist Joshua “There’s absolutely no reason for hesitation. With the new products out there, you can go gray slowly or overnight. Low lights make your hair look like a million bucks during the transition to gray. They give the illusion of uniformity to unevenly graying hair and I can apply color to individual strands of hair to make your transition to silver vixen seamless.” Joshua Dieffenbacher, “Whether your tresses are midnight black or arctic ice –straight, kinky or curly locks are my ice creams.” So if you want to strike out in a bold new direction this year, come see Joshua—colorist extraordinaire- for a consultation and consider the beauty and ease of your natural gray hair. There may be a silver haired temptress hiding in you.

Move over Cupid…you have some serious competition. February is “Eye Love You” month and if you’re looking for a little “Je ne sais quoi” to charm that special someone, Edris Salon invites you to check out our resident Cupid in charge of putting the eyes in “I love you” this Valentine’s Day. He’s Quinntin –the fab makeup artist who’s just joined our amazing crew at Edris. Edris is smitten by Quinntin’s good looks and even more impressed with his professional credentials–apparently so were Bobby Brown and Bergdorf Goodman. That’s right; Quinntin was Bobby’s “first”–Executive Director of Global Artistry—, and BG’s Beauty Expert for 10 years! And for the record–, Quinntin doesn’t kiss and tell, but you should know that “Ask Quinntin” had a full-page highlight in every issue of BG’s seasonal fashion magazine while they were together. That was then….Edris has him now! So what does our cupid say is a must when you look into the magic mirror this Valentine’s Day? “It’s the eyes ladies. The eyes say it for you when it comes to I Love You. Stay away from two- faced lovers! Instead, go for two-faced gel eyeliners! They stay true to color and every woman needs one that goes on easy and stays where it’s put!” When it comes to terrific color, Quinntin says —“Stick with the classic mascaras. Benefit, Givenchy, YSL and Dior are the only acceptable standards.” And–if you’re looking for shadows with “a superb range of intense colors—there’s nothing like the Nars line.” Stop by and “Ask Quinntin” He, along with our marvelous staff of style and colorists will help you put together a look that says I love you this Valentine’s Day and every day! Til next time and remember–Eye Love You!
